Cost of Caffeine
Today I realized, that basically every day, I drink about $5 in caffeine – in coffee, ice coffee, ice caps, coke, pepsi, rockstar, redbull, you name it. (though I have nearly-completely stopped the energy drinks). So I thought it would be fun to do some math:
- In a week… = $35
- In a month… = $150
- In a year… = $1,825
Its a bit mind blowing when you do the actual math. $1800 is about 3% of my annual pay… I could do a lot more fun things with $1800 than just drink coffee. I should really give this “water” another chance.
How much do you spend on Caffeine each year? Or another daily crutch in life?

When I was in university, there was a Tim Hortons about 100 feet from the student lounge where we all hung out, and we didn’t even have to go outside to get there. It wouldn’t have been a stretch to assume I went at least once a day! I try not to think about how much I spent there over four years.
Now, I spend about $5 a week on buying coffee/lattes/etc., plus another $15 a month on coffee beans and tea bags to make at home. I never drink pop or energy drinks. So I spend about $440 a year, which doesn’t seem that bad. And I always buy the really nice coffee beans, too. I could get away with spending less if I just bought Nabob or something.
I love the smell of coffee brewing, but don’t care for the taste. But it tastes pretty much exactly how it smells. Is that odd? I’ve all but cut out any kind of soda from my diet, so I usually spend a big fat goose egg on caffeine!
Thats half my goal — I’d like to at least cut back on the caffeine all together. Both to save $, and that I’m not in a caffeinated state of mind all day >)
When I was in University, I lived off Ice Caps from Timmys… So good.
I spend about $4/week buying coca-cola in the small 8oz cans to limit my intake. I’m afraid I’ll forever be a Coke drinker.
For coffee, I drink it for free at the office — great motivation to go into the office every day. I try to not pay for it if I don’t have to.
Water is hard for me to down, too, but I find that a squeeze of lime juice makes it tastier.
